Taste of the World: New Zealand

WINEDEPOT isn’t just Australian. We’re proud to have boots on the ground across the Tasman, too, with our New Zealand sales team focused on sourcing unique wines that you won’t find anywhere else.

With a fresh container of new NZ wines now in our warehouse and live here on MARKET, now is the perfect time to showcase two of our favourite Kiwi producers and their glorious, typically rarified wines.

P.S. Don’t forget that you can view all the latest releases from New Zealand, Australia and around the world in our New Arrivals collection too.

Alpha Domus

Alpha Domus is one of the Hawke’s Bay originals.

Founded in 1989 when the Ham family bought a 20-hectare strip of land in an area of the Western Heretaunga plains adjoining what would eventually become the Gimblett Gravels.

At the time, this area was just grazing country (with an airstrip). The Ham family, however, were amongst the core producers that made this part of Hawke’s Bay into The Bridge Pa Triangle Wine District.

Blessed with free-draining red metal gravel and clay soils, and sunny skies, Bridge Pa Triangle’s reputation now rivals that of Gimblett Gravels - although often without the pricetag.

Alpha Domus’ reputation, in turn, was built on structured, powerful, and often indulgent Bordeaux blends, Syrah and Chardonnay.

WINEDEPOT is the sole Australian access point for the coveted Special Reserve and Reserve range of Alpha Domus wines.

In 1996, the Skeggs family (led by bluff oyster pioneer and ex-Mayor of Dunedin, Sir Clifford Skeggs), planted their first Akarua vineyard on Cairnmuir Rd in Bannockburn.

At the time, Central Otago was still dominated by micro-estates, which made the scale and ambition of this project so impressive. Now, twenty-five years later, Akarua has 50 hectares of vines and is the largest privately owned vineyard in Central Otago.

What’s most fascinating about Akarua is not just the scale, but the potential complexity that can be delivered. With 80 different blocks, including Central Otago’s oldest certified organic vineyard, this isn’t just another estate, this is a ‘Central’ figurehead.

Interestingly, Akarua has a big sparkling wine focus, with legendary Chandon winemaker Tony Jordan brought on to launch the winery sparkling line a decade ago, with acclaimed wines ever since.

Of course, Pinot Noir is still king here, with what Bob Campbell MW calls a ‘voluptuous style’ making Akarua Pinot Noir ‘drop dead gorgeous when released’.

Little wonder then that Akarua’s well-priced, and incredibly drinkable, 25 Steps Pinot Noir is one of our most popular wines on MARKET.

Pinot Noir is just the start, however, as WINEDEPOT stocks an extended selection of Akarua wines, from sparkling rosé to multiple different Pinot Noir releases and even an ice wine.

The WINEDEPOT MARKET has an extensive range of New Zealand wines with this selection just the start. Explore the selection here.
